Location: Flagmount, Ireland
Experience an intentional, rural community near Flagmount in the West of Ireland. We are a small intentional community of currently 5 people living and working together on a 29 acre piece of beautiful and unspoilt organic land situated on the edge of the Slieve Aughty Mountains. Our intention is to live in harmony with nature and each other. We regard ourselves as guardians of the land, its bio-diversity and beauty. We produce a good part of our food in the organic garden, the polytunnel and the orchard. Our community is inspired by the late Native American elder Manitonquat and our ethics are based on his teachings. They are: Respect, Non-Violence, Trust, Cooperation and Honesty. The centre of all decision making is the circle, where we all come together as equals and we invite all helpers or volunteers to participate as well. Circles are held regularly or as needed. We have organised and hosted several camps with Manitonquat and his wife Ellika on our land. When you stay with us you agree to stay here entirely at your own risk and to become a temporary member of our community. There is always someone there to listen to you. Welcome home. We love music and some of us play instruments and sing. Sometimes we sit together around the fire in the field. We also love animals and currently there are two dogs living here. We have one meal together (usually dinner) and take turns preparing it. Breakfast and lunch are prepared by everyone on their own. We will provide the basic ingredients. WORKING ARRANGEMENT There is always work to be done like gardening, keeping the house tidy, planting trees, harvesting and conserving, minding or walking the dogs or whatever comes up. At times we have building projects or maintenance like painting, fencing etc. We expect Helpers / Volunteers to work 4 hours a day 5 days a week (2 days off usually the weekend but we are flexible) and to be communicative, willing to learn and help and positive in their attitude. We are not perfect and value their input and are always listening to and are open for suggestions. Over the years we had more than a hundred helpers from all over the world and many positive comments from them in our guest book. LIVING ARRANGEMENT Accommodation in the main house (community centre) in your own room or sharing, depending on how many helpers are here. There are many interesting places in the area, e.g. the fort of Briain Boru, the last High King of Ireland, the shores of Lough Graney, Kinvarra on Galway Bay, the unique landscape of the Burren. We sometimes take helpers to these places by car during the weekends. There are traditional Irish music sessions which you can attend. There are other 'alternative' places around to visit.
