Permaculture in Indonesia

Location: Agam - Bukittinggi, Indonesia
current situation:

Free-range chicken farming is optional, but offers many benefits: easy maintenance, a new source of income, and local organic meat and eggs. The chicken coop is already built, and I have several chicks and adult chickens. I make sure the odor is minimized to avoid disturbing the neighbors.

The coop is several meters wide and has two levels. The top is also covered with netting to prevent the chic

kens from jumping out. The chickens are free to move around inside the coop (an area enclosed by a net fence) and breed. The coop also has a hatching area, food and water containers, and a container filled with sand or fine soil so the chickens can bathe in the sand and dust to clean their feathers of lice. They are often fed corn and fresh leaves, as well as leftover rice and vegetables from the kitchen. Regarding chicken manure, I address this by sprinkling sand, charcoal, and kitchen ash.

The BSF coop is currently under construction. We can use food scraps to feed the maggots. The leftovers need to be chopped, dried, and arranged in a container. The maggots will turn into flies, which can be collected and fed to the chickens after they die.

We use compost to fertilize some plants in the front garden. Food waste is stored in a damp area so it can be processed into compost.

The back garden is overgrown and needs attention. This area is vast and has great potential for growing many crops. Currently, there are banana, dragon fruit, coffee, pineapple, and taro trees, among other plants.

WORKING ARRANGEMENT

Volunteers can really make a difference in the sustainability of the home and the local community. You'll help feed and care for chickens, set up a black soldier fly (BSF) control project, convert food waste into compost, clean up the backyard (including pruning trees for firewood), and ultimately build a permaculture environment.

What will you be responsible for?

In general, the activities are flexible, both in terms of time and skills. We can tailor tasks to your preferences and expertise.
