Energy Exchange at an Organic Farm in Puerto Rico

Location: Villa Angelina, Puerto Rico, USA
We have an 80 acre non profit farm newly created to educate children to learn how to grow and live sustainably. Come on down and spend a few months camping and working on a wonderful project.

We have two options...one is working on the farm, which is the bulk of the chores, clearing land, planting, building small structures.

The second option for one person only is to help us in house with housekeeping and tutoring our 5 year old.

Accommodation
On the farm is rustic camping, no electricity, no running water. Bring a tent. With lots of folks it is really fun. If you need to plug in and charge up you can come over and get online.

In the house, you get a room, bed, running water and wifi.

I guess it just depends on what you are looking for...or what your comfort level is. We can accommodate a multitude of people on the farm.

We are developing an amazing non-profit organic sustainable farm dedicated to teaching the youth and increasing community awareness of sustainable agriculture through our various educational and community projects. We are located within the foothills of El Yunque Rainforest here in Luquillo, Puerto Rico, and we are just one mile from the beach. We are interested in receiving both day volunteers from the island, and overnight volunteers from near and afar. All volunteers/Wwoofers/Energy Exchangers are welcome to come and help us with a multitude of projects on this 80 acre farm. The activities and projects that we need to fulfill are permaculturally based and include the following: land clearing, seeding and weeding, bed making, natural earth building and much more. No experience is required, however the desire to learn, experience and accomplish is absolutely necessary.

Day Volunteers
Our working hours are 8am-3pm, with a lunch break from 11:30-1pm. We provide you with a vegetarian lunch and ask that you stay for the full work day. We are at the farm working Tuesday thru Saturday and would love as much community involvement as possible. This is really a great opportunity for Puerto Rican high school and university students to fulfill their mandatory community service requirements. We also love organized groups who’d like to adopt us as their community service project, so if your church or social group would all like to come out together, please contact us!

Overnight Volunteers
We have a minimum stay of 1 week (arrival on Monday, and departure on Sunday), and a maximum stay of 6 months. We prefer somewhere in between 3 – 6 months. If you are interested in a longer term stay, that can be communicated, however we would first like you to commit to the two months so we can feel you out… and you can feel us out too. We provide 3 simple vegetarian meals a day, and accommodations in exchange for 5-6 hours of work a day, Tuesday thru Saturday.

The accommodations right now are very simple: camping on the farm with no electricity or running water. We have composting toilets next to the camping area, and will soon have an outdoor shower as well. We are just beginning, so things are starting from scratch. If this is a bit too rough for you, or if you’re wanting to have a few extra amenities such as electricity, an indoor bathroom and shower, a roof, and flat surface to put your sleeping pad or air mattress on (actual beds will be coming soon), and a kitchen to use, we offer discounted housing at our guesthouse, Casa del Sol, two blocks from the farm, for $25/night per person. The minimum age for both day and overnight volunteers is 15 years old. Overnight volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Safety is always a concern and where we are located is generally safe and the community is in support of what we are trying to accomplish. However…be smart! We will require you to sign a waiver of liability during your time with us.

We are looking for folks who are most interested in hard work and hard fun! However, no smoking, alcohol or campfires will be permitted on the farm or at Casa del Sol. The more folks we have, the more fun it will be and the more we can accomplish. We will make the experience memorable for you and also plan on taking you around to see our beautiful Luquillo beaches and the magnificent El Yunque Rainforest!
