Teaching Volunteer Project in Ghana

Location: Senya Beraku, Ghana
St. Miracle Works Educational Foundation is a recognized and registered non-profit/African organization that works to foster cross cultural understanding through travel and volunteer work experience in Ghana. Our volunteer programs are suitable for anyone on a gap year, career break or for anyone looking to do a short-term volunteer program. SMWEF provides safe, unique, flexible, meaningful and extremely affordable volunteer programs and non-paid internships work experience in Ghana.

About the Program

Volunteers help in a wide range of subjects, including Mathematics, Creative Arts, Science, Basic English and Mathematics etc. The teaching program takes place in Nursery, Primary and Junior High Schools where volunteers initially either shadow or teach under the supervision of a local teacher. Once acquainted with the school and the curriculum, volunteers in Ghana get the chance of teaching independently. It is important that volunteers are flexible as there are a number of other tasks they can help with. These might include helping children with their homework, arranging games and activities, cleaning the classroom and assisting teachers with administrative duties.

It is not compulsory to have prior to have prior teaching experience to have completed formal teaching training to volunteer in Ghana for this program. Volunteer’s level of involvement within the classroom can be tailored to suit their skills and interests. A willingness to share and an ability to be proactive is important and will make volunteers a valuable addition to any classroom.

Volunteer Placement

This placement is available in rural and semi-rural communities of Ghana. All these locations are safe, secure and friendly to foreigners. Volunteers have the opportunity to choose any of the locations and volunteers on long stay of more than a month can do the placement in two different locations. Accra is the capital and seat of the government; it has a lot of beaches and lot of shopping mall stock with a lot of foreign products. Cape Coast has beaches and also the historic centre for slave trade.

What You Can Bring When Volunteering

There is a lack of playing materials at most centres. Volunteers can bring materials like paints, pencils and pens, colours, crayon, drawing papers, toys etc. Some of these materials can also be found in the local markets for ready purchase. Most importantly, you bring a big heart and smile to the children and helping them feel the societal impact through education.
Volunteers work closely with other local teachers and staff and report to the headteacher of the school on assignments and also when you have any issues at the school. Volunteers are also paired with other volunteers if any to work on similar projects.
