We need help for Orphanage and School

Location: Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Our mission is to provide education, school supplies, and uniforms to those children that need it most. We serve families and their children in the Takeo Delta region of Cambodia by providing basic services at the community level including: Clean drinking water, hygiene classes, and a community-run garden.

Operated by Mr. Kim Ny for over three years, we care for over three-hundred children between the ages of 6 and 18 years old. Students come here for both English and computer classes. Additionally, we serve as a home for twelve kids who currently live with Mr. Kim on premises. Currently, we have five local-teachers on-hand, volunteering their time for the students. However, a lot of help is needed, especially in terms of teaching, but also in in regards to taking-care of both the children and the house.

Prey Nhheak village is located around 35 km in the south of Phnom Penh. You can come here by public van from Phnom Penh easy in 1.5 hours.

Help

We need a lot of help. All volunteers are more than welcome. In particular we need help with teaching, both English and computer skills. Also needed are volunteers that are able to help Mr. Kim care for the children. Other volunteer roles include caring-for and cleaning the school, working in the garden, house projects (painting and construction) and general charity work. Volunteers are expected to contribute approximately 3 hours of their time per day. This contribution will however vary, depending on the day and what kind of work is needed.

Accommodation

We provide simple accommodation. Its volunteers are able to stay with the kids at the center. We have two private rooms, one room is ideal for a couple, and the other is suitable for individuals, and contains bunk beds for sleeping. Depending on how many volunteers we have at the time, there is also space in the common area in the case that all the rooms are full. We also provide one shared bathroom and shower (Cambodian-style).

We do provide lunch and dinner for its volunteers. You will cook and eat together with the children. Meals consist mostly of typical Cambodian fare. Because we are a charity and does not receive significant funding from external sources, we ask that volunteers contribute a nominal $1 - $2 per day for food costs. This money helps to cover the costs of food for the volunteers, and for the children, improving the welfare of the students, helping to bolster their nutrition levels and consequently their education.

We are non-smokers, however, smoking is allowed outside the property.

In their free time volunteers can explore the village and Cambodian countryside. Prey Nhheak village has a lovely market, many shops, temples and public schools, all of which are very interesting to visit.

Transportation to/from Phnom Penh is easy and possible by public car, mini-van, and bus. The trip takes about 1 hour. Transportation is also available to/from Kompot is also possible, and takes around 1.5 hours.
