Volunteers must be verified before contacting projects to keep VB safe and spam-free, protecting hosts/projects from unwanted messages. Without hosts, you wouldn't have volunteering opportunities, so their safety is important.
For the first 8 years online, volunteers could contact projects right after signing up. But by 2022, spam skyrocketed with messages asking for paid work, visa invitation letters, and more. Something had to be done! As a non-profit, VB can't afford an expensive third-party system for identity verification, so we introduced a simple solution: a ONE-TIME donation as proof of identity.
This helps confirm your name, protect hosts, and support the cost of running VB ❤️ in exchange you get a LIFE-TIME membership with your verified profile. For comparison, other volunteering networks like WorkAway and WorldPackers charge €60/€80 PER YEAR! 😞
