Meditation and Buddhist centre volunteer in Derbyshire UK

Location: Derbyshire, United Kingdom

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

We are specifically seeking people with an interest in meditation and Buddhism who would like to volunteer in building, cleaning, gardening, B&B, or restaurant and cafe work. Cooking skills are also a plus, as the café soups and light meals are made on the premises. We would also welcome people with skills in computing and building.

The centre is set in 38 acres of beautiful Derbyshire parkland, open to the public seven days a week. Many visitors come to enjoy the grounds, meditation room, café, shop, and Barn Bed and Breakfast. The centre promotes the development of inner peace, compassion, and wisdom.

We are located about 30 minutes by bus from the centre of Derby, and about 1 hour by bus from the Peak District, a national park that offers opportunities for walking, cycling, and climbing. Flights to East Midlands Airport and London are often reasonably priced, and from those cities you can get a cheap bus to Derby, or an advance rail ticket.
WORKING ARRANGEMENT
Working hours are from 9.00am to 5.00pm, which includes a 1-hour lunch break, 5 days a week with 2 days off. Please note that your days off may be during the week. You will have free entry to meditation classes on your days off. Volunteering opportunities are varied and could include working in our world peace café, gardening, building, helping with administration, publicity design, cooking, or cleaning. If you are a long-stay volunteer, you would be expected to contribute generally to community life in addition to your set volunteer hours.
LIVING ARRANGEMENT
Room and board are provided, with cooked communal meals at lunch and supper time. Internet access is available for light email use, but no computer is provided. We have people living and volunteering from all over the world here. It is a lovely, warm, and vibrant place with plenty of opportunity to make friends and learn new skills.

As a Buddhist community, you would need to abide by our philosophy while at the centre. This means no eating meat, no drinking alcohol, no playing music, and no smoking on the premises. Please bring a sleeping bag and work clothes.
