Iceland Forest Service – Wilderness Management – Trail Team

Report Login

Location: Thórsmörk, Iceland

The Thórsmörk trail volunteer programme was established by Iceland’s Forest Service (Skógrækt ríkisins) to assist with the maintenance of the hiking trails in Thórsmörk and Goðaland. This area is very popular with tourists and maintaining good quality hiking trails helps to protect fragile areas and improve safety for visitors.

The volunteer programme runs from May – October and our work can be divided into three main parts; trail maintenance, trail mapping and erosion control. The Forest Service works closely with a number of partner organisations who send volunteer teams to help with the work as well as recruiting its own trail maintenance volunteers and team leaders.

Group 2: 20.07.14 – 30.08.14

The Iceland Forest Service (Skógrækt ríkisins) has established a new wilderness management volunteer project in Thórsmörk and Goðaland and we are now looking for volunteers who would like to join us for 6 weeks this summer. Our team’s main tasks are maintaining hiking trails in the area, trail mapping, survey work, GPS data collection and a special erosion repair project in badly damaged areas close to the fresh lava from the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption.

This project combines practical conservation work in one of the most beautiful parts of Iceland with an opportunity to complete the famous 4-day Laugavegur hiking trail from Landmannalaugar to Thórsmörk. These placements are an opportunity to get to know this amazing area and play an important role in helping to protect it.

No previous experience of this work is necessary, as training will be provided. We are looking for participants who have some experience of camping and hill walking, enjoy wilderness landscapes and are ready for a challenge. Iceland’s notoriously changeable weather means that our teams have to be well prepared with good waterproofs and tents.

Due to the strenuous nature of our work, participants must be physically fit and many of our work sites are in quite remote locations so we do a lot of hiking to get to them. Applicants must be over 20 years of age.

Project costs
There is no participation fee. Wilderness Management Team volunteers pay their own travel costs to Iceland and join their team at the Langidalur basecamp in Thórsmörk. Throughout the placement food, transport and campsites are provided. Please note that participants cover their own costs if they leave the project area during their free time.
