Horse herding with nomads in Mongolia π΄ποΈ
Location: Central Province, Mongolia
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
We are a nomadic family living in the heart of the Mongolian steppe, and our life revolves around horses. They are our transport, our pride, and our closest companions. We have a herd of semi-wild horses that roam the vast grasslands, and we need volunteers who are comfortable around animals and eager to learn the ways of the open plains.
We move with the seasons, following the best grazing lands for our animals, so you will be part of a truly nomadic lifestyle. There is no fixed address here. Your home moves with you, and the landscape changes with every migration. It is a life of freedom, hard work, and deep connection to nature.
Your tasks will include helping to herd the horses on horseback, bringing them in from the open fields, tethering and feeding them, and preparing them for daily needs. You will also help with milking, collecting firewood, and maintaining the camp, including setting up and taking down the Ger during migration. The pace is slow but steady, and there is always something to do.
You will live in our Ger, a traditional felt-lined tent that is warm, sturdy, and surprisingly cozy. The space is shared, and the atmosphere is family-oriented and welcoming. You will eat simple but hearty food, mostly meat, dairy, and bread, the kind of food that gives you strength for the day ahead.
Mongolia is vast and wild. The sky stretches forever, the wind never stops, and the silence is deep. On quieter days, you can ride out alone, watch the eagles circle, or just sit and listen to the horses breathe. You will return with a different understanding of freedom and space.
