Community centre building project in Sorowako, Indonesia 🏗️🌏

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
We are working on building a community centre in Sorowako, a small town in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Located on the eastern shore of the beautiful Lake Matano, Sorowako is surrounded by lush rainforest, mountains, and a rich cultural heritage. The community here is warm and welcoming, a mix of Bugis and Toraja people, and life moves at a slower, more connected pace .
Our project focuses on creating a space that can serve the local community for years to come. The centre will be a place for gatherings, education, cultural events, and community activities. This is a hands-on, collaborative effort, and we are looking for volunteers who are ready to get their hands dirty and be part of something meaningful.
The work involves a variety of construction tasks. Depending on the stage of the project, you might be helping with bricklaying, mixing concrete, cutting and treating timber, rendering, tiling, or landscaping . We use local materials and traditional building techniques, so you will learn about vernacular construction while contributing to a project that reflects the village's cultural identity. No prior experience is necessary, just a willingness to learn and a positive attitude. We can show you what to do .
On weekends and in your free time, there is plenty to explore. Lake Matano is just a short walk or boat ride away, perfect for swimming, kayaking, snorkeling, or free diving . There are hidden caves accessible by boat, and a nearby waterfall where you can swim and jump off the rocks. The surrounding mountains offer opportunities for trekking and camping . You can also get involved in local life, joining dance classes, visiting the market, or simply sharing coffee with new friends .

WORKING ARRANGEMENT
We ask for about 5 hours of work per day, Monday to Friday, with weekends free to rest and explore . The work is physical and outdoors, so be prepared for heat and humidity. But it is also incredibly rewarding. You will see the progress day by day and be part of a team that is building something lasting for the community. The work is shared among volunteers and local workers, creating a collaborative and friendly atmosphere .LIVING ARRANGEMENT
Accommodation is simple and provided in the village. You will have a bedroom in a family home, and all meals are provided . You will eat home-cooked Indonesian food, often with produce from the garden. The living situation is basic but comfortable, and you will truly be immersed in local life.
