PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Himalayan Media Welfare Society dedicates its time and efforts to empowering the poorest communities through education and medical assistance, regardless of race, creed, colour, religion, beliefs, circumstance, or environment. Our organisation in Gorubathan, Darjeeling, is a small community-based charity registered under the government of West Bengal. Through the hard work and commitment of our volunteers, we can continue to provide a better life for those most in need within our district.
We have no set programs as such and will try to accommodate our volunteers as best as possible to make your stay efficient and rewarding. Working hours for volunteers depend on their availability and time. Volunteers can stay from one week to one year, as per their convenience.
Projects include:
Children Welfare and Education – We provide free tutorial classes and other scholastic needs like books, pens, storytelling, choreography, artistic competitions, and refreshments to semi-orphan and underprivileged children. We celebrate their birthdays, give them small gifts, and help with any sicknesses to ensure they are healthy.
Himalayan Eye Care Centre – We opened a Primary Eye Care Centre in Gorubathan, the only one in and around the villages. We open the facility every Monday to treat eye diseases for surrounding villagers. We have a vision to establish a fully-developed Eye Care Centre to serve people on a daily basis.
Awareness Programmes – We run programmes on HIV/AIDS, human trafficking, child labour, and drug addiction, which are burning problems in our society. We aim to minimise the dangers by raising awareness.
We believe the life experiences, education, and most of all love that our volunteers bring are the most valuable assets to the children and communities of Darjeeling.
WORKING ARRANGEMENT
We don't require any formal qualifications, as we believe everybody can bring something positive to our organisation. Desirable qualities include spoken English, teaching experience, or medical qualifications, but more importantly, a kind heart and the willingness to make a positive difference in our deprived area.We have no set programs as such and will try to accommodate our volunteers as best as possible to make your stay efficient and rewarding. LIVING ARRANGEMENT
Unlike many volunteering organisations, we do not charge any fees or commission. We charge a rate of only $12 per day for accommodation, which includes 3 meals a day and other refreshments. This is completely non-profitable and helps keep our organisation going. We can accommodate up to 4 people at any one time, and arrangements for more people can be made upon request. We can also arrange local pick-up and drop-off if you let us know your arrangements, though there may be a small fee to cover costs.We believe the life experiences, education, and most of all love that our volunteers bring are the most valuable assets to the children and communities of Darjeeling.
