Location: Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Description:

Samaritan Volunteer Project is a non government organization based in providing education to the children and youth in our community. We are located in south Dar Es Salaam about 15 kilometers from the city center.

Dar Es Salaam is the largest city in Tanzania with almost 6 million people. Young people and children are approximately more than 50%. In most local families there are many children and young people who have no motivation to go to school, even their parents do not know the importance of education, therefore, you will see them in the street losing the opportunity to educate themselves.

Our mission is to provide education and motivation to the children and youth to love education. “Since I started Samaritan Volunteer Project I saw changes and motivation from the parents to take their children to schools and also for the youth now they like to learn new things from our school”, says Emmanuel, director of the organization.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:

We offer the following volunteer opportunities:

Teaching children in our Samaritan school (ages 2 – 15 years). Around 50 children and youth come to learn English, writing, reading, math, art, language, vocational skills, games and sports.

Computer training classes for local youth:
Basics of using a computer
Microsoft Office applications

Improving our social media presence and website development, with new content, design improvement and photography.

Teaching children in a three local nursery schools (ages 4-6 years). Work with local teacher to instruct children writing, math, art, language, vocational skills, games and sports.

Fundraising. Provide ideas and strategies for making money online or with sponsors to support our projects.

Through our projects you will not only have the opportunity to volunteer, but also to experience the everyday life of a local. Get around using local transportation, browse markets to find ingredients to cook local food, and enjoy exercise and football at the community grounds. All of these are great ways to learn and practice Swahili and engage with locals.

PROJECTS

Samaritan School

About 50 children and young people attend our school that operates in a house with two spaces for learning. We have classes in the morning from 9 am to 12 pm, and again in the afternoon from 4 pm to 6 pm. Our children are from low-income families, so we do not charge and we look for volunteers to help us with education in English, math, art, science, sports and games.

We want to continue growing and be able to count on extra class activities such as film forum, various workshops and a "hotbed" for young people to start participating in the education of the youngest children.

Needs:

- Study material for children such as: pencils, pens, colors, markers, notebooks and exercise books and drawings.
- Endowment for the school as boards, books and dictionaries.
- Sports equipment
