PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Restore Nature Uganda is a community-based environmental conservation initiative based in Jinja, Uganda. Our mission is to restore and protect the environment while empowering communities, children and young people to take action for a more sustainable future.
Our work focuses on environmental conservation, climate change awareness, tree planting, ecosystem restoration and environmental education in communities and schools. We organize tree planting activities, conduct awareness sessions on climate change and environmental protection, and encourage schools and local communities to adopt sustainable practices.
Through our activities, we have contributed to environmental initiatives reaching more than 167 schools and over 20 communities, working with children, youth, teachers, community members and local leaders. We believe that protecting nature should go hand in hand with improving people’s lives, so we also promote community participation and sustainable livelihood opportunities.
We are interested in hosting international volunteers who can support our environmental and community activities. Volunteers may participate in tree planting, environmental education in schools, community awareness campaigns, climate action activities, conservation activities, social media and communication, project development, and other activities depending on their skills and interests.
Hosting international volunteers would also create an opportunity for cultural exchange and learning. Volunteers can share their knowledge and experiences while learning about Ugandan communities, environmental challenges and local approaches to conservation.
Our long-term goal is to expand our environmental restoration work, reach more schools and communities, strengthen partnerships locally and internationally, and create a growing network of people working together to protect nature and build more sustainable communities.
We welcome partnerships with organizations, schools, volunteer agencies and individuals who share our commitment to environmental conservation, climate action, education and sustainable community development.
Volunteers will support Restore Nature Uganda with activities such as:
* Tree planting and environmental restoration activities.
* Environmental education and climate awareness sessions in schools and communities.
* Community sensitization and conservation campaigns.
* Supporting school environmental clubs and activities.
* Helping with community clean-up and sustainability activities.
* Supporting project documentation, photography, social media and communication.
* Assisting with fundraising, project development and partnership activities where appropriate.
* Sharing their own skills and ideas that can contribute to the development of the project.
Working Hours
Volunteers will generally work around 4–5 hours per day, 5 days a week, with schedules agreed in advance according to the activities planned. Some activities, such as tree planting or school visits, may require starting earlier in the morning. We also maintain flexibility so volunteers have sufficient free time to explore Jinja, experience Ugandan culture and rest.
Preferable Length of Stay
We preferably welcome volunteers for 2–4 weeks or longer. Longer stays of 1–3 months are especially valuable because they allow volunteers to become more familiar with our work, build relationships with the community and contribute to projects more meaningfully. However, we are open to discussing shorter or longer stays depending on the volunteer’s availability and the needs of the project.
Restore Nature Uganda provides a simple and safe accommodation arrangement for volunteers in Jinja. Volunteers will stay in accommodation provided or arranged by the project, with basic facilities and a welcoming environment. Depending on availability, volunteers may share accommodation with other volunteers.
We provide meals and basic food support during the volunteer’s stay. To help us cover the cost of food and maintain this arrangement, volunteers are kindly requested to contribute €8 per day towards food costs. This contribution is used specifically to support the purchase and preparation of meals and basic food items during their stay.
We aim to provide simple, healthy and locally available meals while also introducing volunteers to Ugandan food and culture. Volunteers are welcome to inform us in advance about any dietary requirements or allergies so that we can discuss suitable arrangements.
Volunteers are also expected to respect the accommodation, keep their living areas clean, and participate in basic household responsibilities. The living arrangement is intended to encourage cultural exchange, cooperation and a friendly experience between volunteers and the local community.
